Crescent Select® Pure White Archival Matboard — 100% Acid-Free Custom Bevel

The foundational matboard of Chelsea contemporary galleries and museum photography exhibitions. Pure White provides a crisp, neutral architectural window that maximizes contrast and lets modern pigments speak without color cast.

Thickness & Bevel 4-Ply (1/16") // 45° White Core
Color Undertone Crisp Optical Gallery White
Ideal Mediums Contemporary Photography, Giclées & Modern Grids

Why Contemporary Galleries Specify Pure White 4-Ply Matting

When framing contemporary photography, bright paper giclée prints, or minimalist line art, any yellow or cream undertone in the matboard can make the highlights of your print look dingy. Our Crescent Select® Pure White Pre-Cut Matboard matches the bright alpha-cellulose and optical brighteners of modern fine art papers.

Precision-cut on our computerized mat cutters in Farmingdale, NY with a razor-sharp 45-degree white-core bevel, Pure White creates an airy, gallery-grade sanctuary between your artwork and the glazing.

Curator's Recommended Frame Pairings: Pair with our 1.25-Inch Black Gallery Cap Frame for high-contrast Chelsea grids, our 1.25-Inch White Cap Frame for white-on-white coastal minimalism, or our American Walnut Frame.

Conservation Chemistry & Matboard Architecture

Standard retail matboards are milled from raw wood pulp containing lignin—an organic polymer that breaks down over time and releases acids. Within a few years, cheap mats turn brown at the bevel and permanently burn a dark yellow stain ("mat burn") into your artwork.

  • Crescent Select® Conservation Standard: Purified alpha-cellulose fibers completely stripped of acid and lignin, buffered with calcium carbonate to maintain an alkaline pH reserve for 100+ years.
  • Physical Airspace Spacer: The 4-ply (1/16") thickness keeps your photograph or watercolor from pressing directly against the glazing, preventing moisture condensation and emulsion sticking. Read Mastering the Mat Board: Depth, Color & Architecture.

How do our Pre-Cut Archival Matboard dimensions work?

  • Outer Dimension Matches Your Frame Size: The outer size you select (e.g., 11"x14" or 16"x20") drops directly into our corresponding Ready-Made Picture Frames.
  • Inner Window Overlap: The inner bevel window is precision-cut slightly smaller (typically 1/4" on each side) than the stated artwork size so your print or photograph rests securely behind the window without falling through.
  • Need a Custom Fractional Window or Bottom-Weighting? Visit our Custom-Cut Archival Matboards Studio for custom window dimensions, 8-ply museum rag, double mats, and V-grooves!

An acid-free front matboard can only protect your artwork if the rear backing board and front glazing are equally archival:
