Complete Shopper's Guide to Acid-Free Archival Foamboard
True conservation framing protects your artwork from both directions: UV-blocking glazing in the front, and a chemically neutral, acid-free barrier in the back. Open the guides below to see how archival foamboard completes your framing assembly.
Corrugated brown cardboard, chipboard, and standard stationery-store foamboard contain raw wood-pulp lignin. Within a few years inside a sealed frame, those boards outgas acidic vapors that migrate straight into the back of fine art paper, leaving brittle brown stripes ("backboard burn").
- Our Conservation Standard: Our Pre-Cut Archival Acid-Free Foamboards are faced with purified, calcium-carbonate-buffered alpha-cellulose liners that neutralize acids for 100+ years.
When framing any photograph, watercolor, giclée print, or diploma, match the same outer dimension across all four studio components:
- Layer 1 (Front): Handcrafted Solid Wood Picture Frame
- Layer 2 (Glazing): Tru Vue® 99% UV Conservation or Museum Acrylic
- Layer 3 (Window Spacer): Crescent Select® 4-Ply Acid-Free Matboard
- Layer 4 (Rear Barrier): 3/16" Pre-Cut Acid-Free Archival Foamboard
Never use spray glue, masking tape, or irreversible heat dry-mounting on valuable prints, originals, or diplomas! Instead, attach your artwork to the Acid-Free Foamboard or Window Mat using reversible acid-free linen/paper T-hinges along the top edge only.
