Pre-Cut Archival Acid-Free Foamboards — The Conservation Backing Barrier

An acid-free front matboard is useless if the backing board behind your artwork is acidic. Our Pre-Cut Archival Acid-Free Foamboards provide a rigid, lightweight, chemically neutral rear barrier that protects works on paper from lignin acid burn, wall dampness, and mechanical warping.

Chemical Standard 100% Acid-Free & Buffered

The Collector's Story: Stopping the Silent Killer of Framed Art ("Rear Acid Burn")

When we open old department-store frames at our Farmingdale, NY restoration studio, we frequently see brown vertical stripes burned right through the back of valuable prints, watercolors, and diplomas. The culprit? Cheap corrugated brown cardboard or unbuffered MDF backing boards that outgas wood-pulp lignin acids directly into the back of the paper.

Our Pre-Cut Archival Acid-Free Foamboards complete the museum conservation sandwich. Faced with purified alpha-cellulose liners and an inert, crush-resistant core, they keep your artwork flat, dry, and chemically isolated for over a century. Explore our dedicated engineering guide at Acid-Free Archival Foam Board Backing.

Conservation Engineering & Mounting Protocols

Not all white foamboard is archival! Standard craft-store poster foamboard is faced with acidic wood-pulp paper that yellows and degrades over time.

  • Buffered Conservation Surface: Our archival foamboards feature lignin-free, calcium-carbonate-buffered alpha-cellulose surface liners that neutralize atmospheric pollutants and migrate zero acid into your artwork.
  • Learn More: Read Custom Framing Costs: What Are You Actually Paying For?.

How should your artwork be attached between the Crescent Select® Matboard and this Acid-Free Foamboard?

  • T-Hinge Conservation Mounting: Using acid-free archival linen or Japanese paper hinges at the top edge only allows fine art prints, watercolors, and diplomas to expand and contract naturally with humidity without buckling.
  • Why Heat Dry-Mounting Destroys Value: Read our warning in Diploma Framing: Preserving Your Greatest Achievement.

Beyond backing works on paper, our acid-free archival foamboard is the structural secret behind museum-grade 3D shadow boxes:

  • Internal Jersey Armatures: We CNC-cut custom torso form boards from acid-free archival foamboard to slip inside sports jerseys—allowing us to hand-stitch the fabric with invisible monofilament thread without a single pin, staple, or drop of glue! Need custom-cut acid-free foamboard up to 40"x60" or bulk trade packs for an exhibition or university archive?
